For Nirmal, the "Ghar Wapsi" is a psychological homecoming. It is an attempt to reclaim a childhood he barely remembers. The tragedy of the character—and the source of the show’s deep pathos—is that he realizes he has become a tourist in his own home. He doesn't know where the well is, he doesn't understand the caste dynamics of the local Panchayat , and he hates the local Paan (which his father loved).
